Paris, 1928. Antoine Balestro, a young and successful painter, has been unable to work since the death of his wife, much to the despair of his gallery owner, Armand. One drunken evening, Antoine tries to contact his wife through a fortune teller. Unbeknownst to him, he is actually speaking with Suzanne, a humble carnival worker who has slipped into his caravan to steal food. Suzanne proves to be a master of deception and, quickly joined by Armand, she begins a series of fake séances. Little by little, Antoine regains his inspiration, but things become complicated for Suzanne as she slowly falls in love with the man she is manipulating...
