The name Bressols may derive from the Gallic name Brictus, the successor to Saint Martin of Tours.
This name is thought to have evolved into ‘brès’ (meaning ‘cradle’ in Occitan), to which the suffix ‘-ol’ was added. During the 19th century, archaeological excavations uncovered a number of flint tools, Celtic axes and the ruins of Gallo-Roman villas!
The town’s name may also be linked to that of the de Brazols family, co-lords of the commune.
