Water-based activities

moments by the water’s edge
Crossed by the Tarn and the Tescou rivers, and bordered bythe Aveyron and the Montech Canal, the Greater Montauban area has developed around these waterways. Make the most of the many leisure activities on offer and these natural assets.

The TARN

This river, which has shaped the identity of our region and continues to inspire our most wonderful summer getaways, rises on Mont Lozère, in the north of the commune of Pont-de-Montvert in Lozère, and flows into the Garonne at Saint-Nicolas-de-la-Grave, in Tarn-et-Garonne.

The Canal Harbour

Located just a stone’s throw from Montauban town centre, Port Canal is a haven of peace and greenery that offers a complete change of scenery.

The gentle rocking of the colourful boats, the birdsong and the chatter of passers-by set the scene.

At the idyllic Port Canal, there are plenty of river-based activities to enjoy.

Welcome to Port Canal!

Two water sports centres in the Greater Montauban area

The Aveyron

The Aveyron, which is 290.6 km long, rises at Sévérac d’Aveyron, in the Aveyron department, and flows into the Tarn north-west of Montauban, between Lafrançaise and Villemade in Tarn-et-Garonne.

With its wild and unspoilt landscapes, the River Aveyron is one of the calmest rivers in France. But beware of still waters – you might be surprised by the graceful stroke of an otter right at your feet!

Ardus Beach

Who among the residents of Montauban or the surrounding area does not remember Ardus Beach?

The light and charm of this spot for swimming and relaxation, so well known to the people of Montauban, have inspired many artists, such as the painters Cadène and Bergère.
Generations have made their way there on foot, by bicycle… and later by car, to cool off near the mill and the bridge, in the shade of the poplars of yesteryear – now mulberry trees and plane trees – and in the waters of the Aveyron, as soon as the temperatures rose a little.
The beach, a natural pool formed by the calm waters of the Aveyron, covering an area of 5,000 m² and with a maximum depth of 2 m, has a designated swimming area which is supervised in July and August.
