Description
Seville, Spain. A blasphemous seducer, Don Giovanni, uses a disguise to seduce Donna Anna,
who is also engaged to Don Ottavio.
Anna rejects him and receives the protection of the Commendatore, her father. During a nighttime duel, Don Giovanni mortally wounds the old man before leaving, without the slightest remorse, in search of other victims, always accompanied by his valet Leporello, a reluctant accomplice in his audacious schemes. Donna Elvira and Zerlina will be the other notorious victims of the libertine.
After perpetually slipping through the net—and relishing it with lust—Don Giovanni will burn in the flames of hell, dragged down by the ghost of the Commendatore, come to avenge his daughter and restore the natural order. Don Giovanni is the quintessence of Mozartian genius, a kind of absolute of the genre, where the highs and lows of human nature coexist, where the tragic and the grotesque, the sublime and the ludicrous, spiritual yearnings and carnal pleasures intertwine. All set to the most divine music ever written. With this "dramma giocoso,"
Mozart and Da Ponte offer us a masterpiece that is both Baroque and Romantic, funny and frightening, and that constantly challenges us.
