Boccia: A Paralympic Precision Sport
Boccia is a ball sport specifically designed for people with disabilities. It is played indoors on a flat, smooth court measuring 12.5 by 6 meters. The goal is to throw or roll colored balls as close as possible to the white ball, called the "Jack." Matches are played in four rounds, and competitions can be played individually, in pairs, or in teams of three. Each player, pair, or team has six balls at the start of each round. The aim of the classification system is to ensure that each player can compete against opponents of similar physical abilities.
There are 8 categories: BC1 - BC2 - BC3 - BC4 - NE1 - NE2 - NE3 - NE4. The BC classification applies to players with significant motor impairments who, depending on the category, require the use of assistive devices or the assistance of a sports partner.
