Description
SMERP conference on Wednesday, May 27, 2026.
From June 18, 1688, to August 13, 1688, on Île à Vache, a small Caribbean island south of present-day Haiti, two remarkable individuals met for nearly two months: the famous and "stubborn" Protestant Samuel de Pechels (Montauban, 1644; Dublin, 1732?), author of the Memoirs, and one of the most celebrated buccaneer captains of all time, Laurens-Cornille Baldran, Sieur de Graaf, better known as Laurens de Graaf (Dordrecht, province of Holland, mid-17th century; Cap-Français, 1704).
This will be an opportunity for us to explore two extraordinary intertwined destinies, to clarify the context of this improbable encounter, and simply to get to know these two figures better.
