Pink October is a national awareness campaign that runs throughout October. Its main aim is to encourage breast cancer screening in order to detect any abnormalities as early as possible, when they are still more easily treatable.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in France and remains the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. For most women (particularly those aged between 50 and 74 with no family historyof the disease), regular screening is offered every two years as part ofthe national organised screening programme. This screening comprises a mammogram and, in some cases, an ultrasound scan, sometimes accompanied by a clinical examination.
Under this scheme, the cost of a mammogram is covered 100 per cent by the health insurance scheme, with no upfront payment required, provided you present the invitation letter you have received.
