This autumn, let us guide you through Montauban’s history and modernity. Combining architectural heritage and living history, the CIAP (Centre for the Interpretation of Architecture and Heritage) and the Greater Montauban Tourist Office are offering a programme of guided tours, unusual events and a show, allowing you to discover a city that is constantly reinventing itself whilst preserving its identity.

GUIDED TOURS OF THE TOWN

LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT MONTAUBAN

24 and 31 October, 19 and 26 December at 2.30 pm

Over the course of an hour and a half, explore the town and discover the Pont Vieux, Saint-Jacques Church and the cathedral, all of which bear witness to the glorious days of Montauban’s history. As you wander from street to street, admire the façades of the beautiful mansions and let yourself be charmed by Place Nationale, the beating heart of the city since its earliest days.

The town houses of Montauban

From the 17th to the 19th century, Montauban was adorned with mansions that bore witness to the city’s exceptional economic boom at that time. Accompanied by a tour guide, you’ll step inside these beautiful residences to discover the charms of their inner courtyards.

Street names take us on a journey through time and are often closely linked to local history, evoking traditions, notable figures or events. Accompanied by a tour guide, follow this route to discover what lies behind Montalban’s street names and the history of these places.

Around Saint-Jacques Church: exploring the ‘Cayenne des Compagnons’

28 November at 2.30 pm

Immerse yourself in a neighbourhood steeped in history, where architecture and traditions come together. Come and admire the Church of Saint-Jacques, a magnificent brick edifice in the heart of the city, and explore a few streets around the monument. Then, step inside the Cayenne des Compagnons, an iconic venue for the guild tradition, where craftsmanship and the passing on of skills have been upheld since 1895. Come and chat with members of the Union Compagnonnique Des Devoirs Unis and admire the many masterpieces on display in their museum.

Sophro-tour: an unusual experience

A walking tour and sophrology session in the city centre led by Martine Boone, a tour guide trained in sophrology

The CIAP invites you to discover Montauban through a different lens. Learning to see… nothing is truer than with the help of sophrology. This unique event will allow you to breathe deeply, slow down, feel the surroundings more keenly, be at one with the monuments around you for a moment, and immerse yourself in the past whilst reconnecting with the present.

Accompanied by the CIAP’s inventory officer, discover the significance of this study as well as a profession that lies halfway between art history and archaeology. Take a closer look at some local funerary architecture, at the graves of men and women who have only just emerged from obscurity, and at a few unexpected works of art…

Temporary exhibition

No fewer than 30 squares, esplanades, forecourts and other public open spacesare scattered throughout Montauban town centre

As the heart of community life, these spaces have been constantly evolving for nearly 900 years, reflecting the needs and challenges of the times. Through a sensitive and immersive approach, the CIAP and the artist Victoria Niki invite you to discover how the people of Montauban have lived in these squares, how they have created, transformed, embellished and transformed them once again. Draw on your own memories and come and listen to those of others: it may well be that these squares inhabit us more than we inhabit them…
