Victor Brun Museum

Natural History Museum
The museum’s extensive collection ofbirds from around the world, mammals and fossils will take you on a journey.

A little history

The museum has a large collection ofbirds, mammals and fossils from the phosphorites of Quercy (Lot), as well as a fragment of the famous Orgueil meteorite, which fell near Montauban in 1864.

Did you know?

Now housed in the former Palais de la Cour des Aides, the Victor Brun Museum project was launched in 1852 by members of the Société des Sciences (Agriculture et Belles Lettres du Tarn-et-Garonne), who wanted to make their private collections available to the people of Montalban.

Appointed curator in 1857, Victor Brun was not only a naturalist, but also a member of the Society and the owner of most of the collections that make up the Museum.

Sano Kali, the Red Panda

Since February 2024, the Victor Brun Natural History Museum has had a new resident, and not the least because it is one of the most popular mammals with the public: the Red Panda! This animal has nothing to do with the Giant Panda, even though they share the same name. The Giant Panda is a member of the Ursidae family, just like Nenette, who arrived at the Museum in 2021. The Red Panda is the only member of the Ailuridae, and if we had to choose a cousin, it would be the Raccoon. Sano Kali was donated by the Réserve Zoologique de Calviac, located in the Dordogne, 1? hours from Montauban. This reserve honours animals that are particularly threatened with extinction, and is involved in a number of conservation programmes, including one dedicated to our beloved Red Panda.

but also ...

Nénette the bear

Since April 2021, this magnificent brown bear has found a natural home in the museum’s osteological collections.
