During the Hundred Years’ War, the treaty of Brétigny gave Montauban to the English. This led to the construction of a fort on the banks of the Tarn, with the left bank remaining French.
In 1664, Pierre de Bertier decided to build his new palais épiscopal on the ruins of the old fort. It became the town hall after the Revolution, and is also home to the first municipal museum and the art school.
