Spring in Greater Montauban 97

By bike

Grand Montauban has an advantage that few towns can claim: it is a key stop on the major cycle routes through Tarn-et-Garonne. Whether you’re coming from the Lot via the Vagabonde route, from Laguépie via the Aveyron Valley and Gorges, or heading towards the Canal des Deux Mers from Montech, your route will inevitably take you past the banks of the Tarn and the town’s pink-brick buildings. Whether you’re a keen cyclist or a leisurely walker, travelling alone or with your family, the choice of your getaway is yours.

Our major routes

Four cycle routes and greenways, from the shaded canal to the gorge crossing, all accessible from the town centre.

The Greater Montauban area is best explored at a different pace – that of cyclists. Here, every turn of the pedals is an invitation to slow down, to take the time to admire the scenery, to stroll through the historic alleyways or to stop for a break by the water’s edge.

Crossed by the Canal des Deux Mers by bike – the starting point of the Véloroute Vallée et Gorges de l’Aveyron cycleroute – the region is an unmissable stop for all lovers of cycle tourism and cycling holidays. With its remarkable heritage, unspoilt natural surroundings, charming villages and the cuisine of the South-West, the Grand Montauban region offers the perfect getaway, whether you’re on a longer tour or simply out for a day’s ride.

Starting from Montauban, a ‘City of Art and History’ and a ‘Grand Site Occitanie’, let yourself be guided along the canals, the banks of the Tarn, the quiet country lanes and the greenways. At every turn, a new discovery awaits you: a lock, a gourmet market, a historic monument or a terrace where you can savour the gentle Montauban way of life.

Whether you’re riding a road bike, a hybrid, a gravel bike or an e-bike, the Greater Montauban area promises an authentic experience combining nature, culture and a chance to get away from it all.

The Wanderer

A cycling adventure of over 500 kilometres

La Vagabonde is one of France’s new major cycle routes. Linking the Massif Central to Tarn-et-Garonne, it winds through a mosaic of landscapes and invites cyclists to discover unspoilt regions, far from the main roads.

Upon reaching the Grand Montauban, travellers can enjoy a stopover where heritage, nature and gastronomy come together. After cycling along the back roads of Quercy, Montauban offers the perfect break to explore its historic centre, browse its many shops and sample local specialities before continuing the adventure.

This route will particularly appeal to fans of cycle touring, gravel cycling and exploring local areas.

Cycling along the Canal des 2 Mers

The legendary route between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean

The Canal des Deux Mers cycle route is one of Europe’s most famous cycle routes. Linking the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, it follows the Garonne side canal and then the Canal du Midi through designated landscapes.

Thanks to the Canal de Montech, the Greater Montauban area is directly connected to this iconic cycle route. A stop in Montauban gives you the chance to explore its historic centre, lively squares, museums, restaurants and its heritage of pink-brick buildings before setting off again towards Toulouse, Agen, Bordeaux or Sète.

The Aveyron Valley and Gorges Cycle Route

Amidst cliffs, medieval villages and a wild river

This cycle route, which is nearly 85 km long, starts in Montauban before heading up the Aveyron valley to Laguépie.

The route mainly follows roads with little traffic and passes throughsome of the most beautiful landscapes in Tarn-et-Garonne: Nègrepelisse, Montricoux, Bruniquel, Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val and the impressive Aveyron Gorges. The terrain becomes more rugged after Bruniquel, offering remarkable panoramic views to cyclists seeking a change of scenery.

The Tarn Trail

Follow the river as the scenery changes

The Tarn Cycle Route invites cyclists to follow the course of the River Tarn through a succession of natural landscapes, authentic villages and towns steeped in history.

In Montauban, the River Tarn has shaped the town’s identity for centuries. Cycling along its banks, travellers discover a peaceful setting where heritage, biodiversity and the art of living come together.

From Bressols, the cycle route offers a different way to explore the region: slowing down, observing the river, passing through natural areas, meeting local producers and enjoying a destination where every stage holds new discoveries.

Suitable for cyclists of all abilities, the Voie du Tarn perfectly complements the other major routes in the area and offers a wider range of options for cycling holidays in the Greater Montauban region.
