Shedding light on the music before watching it: the talk ‘Pink Floyd, a Psychedelic Musical History’, followed by the film More
Drama-comedy by Barbet Schroeder, starring Mimsy Farmer, Klaus Grünberg, and Michel Chanderli. 1h54. West Germany, France, Luxembourg. 1969. Rated 12+.
In search of adventure—and of himself—Stefan, a young German student heading toward the sun, hitchhikes to Paris. There he meets Estelle, a listless young American woman who introduces him to drugs. The lovers, in pursuit of ever-stronger sensations, reunite in Ibiza to live out their dangerous passion. At once prisoners of a desperate love, of drugs, and of Estelle’s former friend, their only escape is tragic…
Talk: “Pink Floyd, a Psychedelic Musical History” by Philippe Gonin, Senior Lecturer and specialist in contemporary music. An undisputed monument of rock, Pink Floyd is one of those groups around which legends are built—legends eagerly embraced by rock history and the music press. Whether by choice or despite themselves, the Floyd saw myths take shape around them, beginning with that surrounding their first leader, Syd Barrett. Although the band experienced its share of internal conflicts over a long career—often tied to what kills creativity (money!)—the work, beyond the quarrels, endures: vast and inseparably linked to the history of music in the second half of the 20th century. This talk proposes to decode that body of work. It will be followed by a brief acoustic concert featuring a selection of songs—iconic or rarer—chosen from across the band’s catalogue.
A guitarist and specialist in the history of contemporary music, Philippe Gonin teaches at Université Bourgogne Europe. A devoted Pink Floyd enthusiast, he is pursuing a project to write one book per album by the famous group: The Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, and Animals, published by Le Mot et le Reste
