Screening of Vita & Virginia followed by a lecture "Virginia Woolf, woman of being"
A biopic by Chanya Button starring Gemma Arterton, Elizabeth Debicki, and Isabella Rossellini. 1 hour 50 minutes. Great Britain, Ireland.
Virginia Woolf and Vita Sackville-West meet in 1922. The former is a revolutionary writer, the latter a worldly aristocrat. When their paths cross, the irresistible Vita sets her sights on the brilliant and fragile Virginia. A passionate relationship begins, defying social conventions and their respective marriages. Virginia's fascination with Vita, the chasm between her life as an artist and the splendor of the eccentric aristocrat, gave birth to Orlando, one of her masterpieces, a profound reflection on gender and art...
Lecture: "Virginia Woolf, Woman of Being" by Maria Santos Sainz, PhD in Information Science and university professor, and Adèle Cassigneul, Associate Professor at the University of Bordeaux, who defended a thesis on the influence of photography and film on the work of Virginia Woolf. A film screening will follow.
Both authors have published books on the icon that Virginia Woolf became during her lifetime and over time. Adèle Cassigneul's Woolf (published by Les Pérégrines) portrays the writer through her political and literary legacy, and through the perspectives of the women who knew and studied her. The text is interwoven with the author's personal and poetic reflections. Maria Santos-Sainz offers a study of the novelist's journalistic career. Her book, *Virginia Woolf, Journalist* (published by Apogée), sheds light on a little-known yet crucial aspect of the writer's life. This lecture explores the roots of Virginia Woolf's literary work and its relevance to contemporary struggles. With these two expert perspectives, we will uncover forgotten facets of Virginia Woolf to paint a new portrait.
Adèle Cassigneul holds a doctorate in British literature from the University of Toulouse 2 and is the editorial director of the journal *Outsider*.
Maria Santos-Sainz is a professor of information science at the Bordeaux Aquitaine Institute of Journalism (IJBA).
