SHELLS, BUTTOCKS, AND PROSTHESES with Arno Bertina.
After two immersive documentary stories—with young Congolese prostitutes taken in by an NGO in The Age of the First Pass, and with former GMS employees occupying their factory in Creuse in Those Who Overwhelm—Arno Bertina returns to fiction with a flourish. Shells, Buttocks, and Prostheses takes place on the shores of the Mediterranean, not far from Tunis, in a strange palace, part luxury hotel, part war hospital, where no one enjoys the swimming pool. Neither do the women, covered in bandages, recovering from plastic surgery. Nor do the survivors of the war in Libya, who have suffered severe mutilations. In this grotesque and poignant closed-door performance, Arno Bertina gives voice to four characters – Rafika, Mdjed, Naïma and Hassen – who take turns asking themselves, in tragic and fanciful monologues, how to escape this morbid place and not give up on joy.
