Balboa is a swing dance that originated in the 1920s on the Balboa Peninsula in California. It is danced in pairs in a close position. It was danced this way because, originally, space was considerably limited in traditional dance halls, and they were governed by strict rules that prohibited the famous "kicks" of the Charleston. Very fluid and elegant, the Balboa is an excellent complement to Lindy Hop for mixing these two dances to fast music, due to its simplicity and economy of movement
