The intellectual and the statesman
Manuel Azaña (Alcalá de Henares, 1880-Montauban, 1940) is one of the most important figures in the contemporary history of Spain. First known as a journalist and writer, he became involved in politics. In 1931, he was one of the founders of the Second Republic, where he was to assume the responsibilities of President of the Council of Ministers (1931-1933), then President of the Republic (1936-1939).

The major debates of the period include his remarkable and sometimes controversial intervention in major reforms: the status of Catalonia, agrarian reform, the religious question or the vote for women.
