    The immense public success of the work is due as much to the genius of Mozart as to the initial approach of the librettist and sponsor Emanuel Schikaneder: "Write me an opera to the taste of today's Viennese public; but also consider, first and foremost, to the lowest of all walks of life. " The germ of universality was there: to sacrifice nothing - in substance and in form - and to perform this masterpiece not at the prestigious Burgtheater in Vienna, but at the popular Freihaustheater.
