Umberto Giordano's uplifting drama, based on Victorien Sardou's 1882 play of the same name, returns to the Met stage for the first time in 25 years. The sophisticated staging reveals the idyllic settings in which the action unfolds: a palace in St. Petersburg, a fashionable Parisian salon and a picturesque Swiss villa.
