In 1975, during an exhibition in Tours, while the contemporary art center of the abbey of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue had already existed for five years, Geneviève Bonnefoi discovered the work of Xavier Krebs. The artist set up his studio in the Tarn, not far from Bruniquel, in 1977, at the end of a geographical and artistic journey of nearly thirty years. Since 1970, the collector has traveled the Occitan roads, from workshop to workshop, to encounter works that would have the good fortune to captivate her gaze, to question her boundless curiosity.

Les Empreintes, which particularly appealed to her, led Geneviève to exhibit the work of Xavier Krebs at various exhibitions at the abbey and to include some twenty of his works in her collection. A very legitimate admission if we consider that when he started painting in the 1950s, close to lyrical abstraction, Xavier Krebs was influenced by the works of Degottex and Hantaï*. Goya, Takanobu and many travels (India, North Africa, Far East) will end up encouraging his work to adorn itself with subtle tones that invite dreaming and meditation. At the dawn of the 21st century, he finds more frank tones, more present forms, but always with notes of colors which are superimposed in transparency.

His works, kept in several museums (museums of Fine Arts in Lyon, Brest, Rennes, Sainte-Croix museum in Sables-d'Olonne, museums in Cahors and Montauban, museum of Modern Art in Paris, National Center Plastic Arts in particular), have been exhibited in Paris as well as in Madrid, Rome, Göttingen, Istanbul, Stockholm, or London.
This exhibition, like a bridge between his workshop in the Tarn, the abbey of Beaulieu-en-Rouergue and Montauban, is presented in honor of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Xavier Krebs. It invites you to rediscover, contemplatively, the work of this artist.
    * Works by Jean Degottex and Simon Hantaï appear in the Brache-Bonnefoi collection.
