Film conference hosted by Christian Durand.
In July 1989, in the extreme south of French Guiana, on the border with Brazil on the Oyapock River, Christian DURAND - then a young journalist - lived and shared the daily life of the Wayampi and Tekos Amerindians, which allowed him to discover their way of life and their culture in one of the last preserved territories of the Amazon rainforest.
Thirty-four years later, after revisiting Cayenne and the coastline as far as Saint-Laurent-du-Maroni, the director decided to restore these images and observe the changes experienced by these Guyanese communities, which today form a formidable ethnic and cultural kaleidoscope.
Christian DURAND, filmmaker, graduate in ethnology, laureate of the Fondation de la Vocation, great television reporter, is passionate about the Americas. Already at twenty years old, with his camera, he lost himself in the jungle of Suriname, in search of forgotten tribes. Then, for five years, he lived in the USA, made films and studied cinema at UCLA, as a Fulbright scholar. Back in France, he is the privileged witness of the magazine “Nomades” on La Cinq.
An eternal traveler, his reports take him to the four corners of the planet. From the summit of Kilimanjaro via the fabulous Maasai tribes, from the depths of the oceans - to discover an East India Company galleon - to the Golden Triangle and the forgotten war of the Karen tribes, he tirelessly packs his bags to leave for new Horizons. For the information of La Cinq, it covers the historical moments of recent years, the Iran-Iraq wars, the Gulf wars, the former Yugoslavia and the fall of the Berlin Wall, followed by the dismantling of the Soviet empire.
Then he presented his films on Russia on the stages of Connaissance du monde, for around twenty years.
Today, he has chosen to revisit the locations of his first reports in French Guiana, with his latest film: “Travels of yesterday and today in the heart of the Amazon”.
