  • Knowledge of the world. In the presence of Carlos Lopes, author. CAPE VERDE The seeds of hope Off the coast of Senegal, a string of volcanic islands bathes in the Atlantic Ocean. At the mercy of the trade winds and harmattan of the Sahara, the traveler reveals a landscape of rocks. The archipelago of Cape Verde is home to ten islands, sometimes marked by their aridity, active volcanoes, sometimes by their lush beaches, bordered by black sand. It is in this unhospitable nature that has been forged throughout the centuries a unique blend of the world: that of a people with multiple identities, African, South American and European, fruit of former slaves and Portuguese settlers. Like the physiognomy of the archipelago, the Cape Verdean identity is apprehended by infinite touches of color.
