Dominating the river Tarn, Ingres Museum shows proudly it’s high outline of pink bricks. It’s first function int the 17th century was to be an Episcopal palace and since it was necessary to find an appropriate place, it was built where the black prince had built his own castle. It’s outstanding guardroom carries you back to the Middle Ages. You will discover lapidary remains from abbeys and convents nowadays vanished.
If Ingres’ works have chosen to settle at the first floor, then Bourdelle and his imposing sculptures (such as Heracles) will welcome you in the inner courtyard. The art lovers will be sensitive to Camille Claudel’s talent, and also Desnoyer, Delacroix… Two hours will be needed to visit the whole museum. From antiquity to ceramics, you can end with contemporary art.
